Spreading Sunshine
Our school-age initiative focused on building connection and community through curated craft kits for children with cancer enduring a long-term inpatient stay.
Kids Supporting Kids
The Sunshine Squad is made up of school-age children who want to give back. Typically, in the non-profit space activities center around fundraising. While it’s necessary for the organization to thrive, this can sometimes leave children feeling like there isn’t a way they can support.
Add in childhood cancer, a subject that can feel scary to kids, and for our organization that is focused on funding research, that can feel abstract.
The Sunshine Squad gives kids a meaningful, non-monetary way to support children with cancer, while also enabling a setting for age appropriate awareness and education.
Children, typically classrooms, but also smaller groups of friends, come together to kit supplies for a craft that a child spending time inpatient for treatment can complete. Our kits are complete with a card from the Sunshine Squad sending them support, and letting them know that kids just like them in the community are thinking of them and wishing them better days ahead.
It’s a win-win. Children can support the cause in a low-pressure way while bringing joy and lessening isolation of children inpatient who are separated from their normal life.
Our kits are currently spreading sunshine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, with more on the way as our program expands.
Ready to spread some sunshine? Let us know and we can help facilitate a Sunshine Squad kitting session.
